When a beloved pet’s time may be growing short, every feeling can arrive at once: love, fear, uncertainty, gratitude, and grief. You do not have to carry those feelings alone.
Anticipatory grief is the grief that begins before a loss happens. It can make ordinary moments feel especially precious and decisions feel impossibly heavy. Whatever you are feeling is allowed.
Sit together. Share a favorite place, a familiar blanket, or a quiet routine. Small moments of comfort and connection matter.
Write down a favorite story. Take a photo. Record the sound of their purr, bark, or breathing. Invite family members to share what they love most.

It can help to write down answers or bring someone you trust to the appointment.
If it feels helpful, consider the details that would bring comfort to you and your pet: who you would like nearby, a favorite toy or blanket, music, or a final message of love. There is no required ritual and no “right” way to say goodbye.
The care, attention, and tenderness you give now are part of your relationship—not a measure you need to earn. Love can include uncertainty. Love can include grief.
